Caleb Ewan celebrated a drought-breaking win on the opening stage of the Deutschland Tour then bemoaned a controversial selection call that will deny him a start in this year's world road championships in Wollongong.

The Australian sprinter's victory in Meiningen snapped a run of bad luck and injuries that saw him go winless through the Giro d'Italia and Tour de France and then miss the Commonwealth Games.

At the end of an undulating stage, Ewan was the fastest in a bunch finish to win for the first time since the Tour of Turkey in April.

Lotto Soudal guided their sprinter perfectly into the final kilometre and it was the Australian who finished the best with powerful acceleration, ahead of second placed Italian Jonathan Milan (Bahrain Victorious) and Germany's Max Kanter (Movistar).

Ewan then posted a photo of himself on Twitter jubilantly crossing the line.

"This one felt good! Especially after the news that I won't be at my home world championships this year," he wrote, confirming he's missed selection in Australia's team that is yet to be officially released.

"To be honest I don't have much to say on the matter other than I'm heartbroken I won't be there to represent my country and that I believe I deserved to be there. Sob story over."

Sydney-born Ewan had targeted the race despite admitting preseason that the 266.9km course with 4,000m of elevation wasn't a perfect fit.

His efforts on Friday morning (AEST) in Germany showed he was no one-trick pony, though.

"With several climbs along the way, this was by no means an easy stage but the team protected me perfectly and brought me into an ideal position towards the line," he said.

"I found my climbing legs again and could hang on without any problems.

"I am really happy to finish it off here after a long period without victories.

"This stage win tastes really sweet following some pretty average months. I kept believing in myself and also my team always supported me.

"So I am happy to be back to winning ways and give the team this oldtimer kaufen deutschland (https://www.flickr.com/photos/oldtimerkaufen/53896543698/) Tour stage victory."
